今回のテーマは out of the way です。イディオムを含む3つの意味をご紹介していきます。
out of the way
▪︎ out of the way の意味
①「ルートから離れて/遠回りして」
・not convenient place to get to
②「道を空ける」
・ not blocking or impeding the way
③「(面倒な事が）終わって/片付いて」
・finished, completed
out of the way は直訳すると「道の外に(離れて)」です。←このイメージを頭に入れて①〜③の意味を例文と一緒にみていきましょう。
▪︎ out of the way の例文
① ルートから離れて/遠回りして）
対象になるものが予定のルートから離れている、つまり「遠回りして」を意味します。
・We have to stop by at the bank but it’s a bit out of the way.
銀行によらないといけないけど、少し遠回りになるな。
・His house is way out of the way so we can’t pick him up.
彼の家はかなり遠回りになるから迎えにいけないよ。

② 道を空ける
通り道に何かがあった場合は、それを「道の外へ」取り除くことになるので「道を空ける」を意味します。
・I’m passing through. Can you move the box out of the way?
通ります。その箱どけてくれますか？
・Get out of the way!
どいて！
→ 自分の進む道のことを指すので out of my way を使うこともできますよ。
③（面倒な事が）終わって/片付いて
②では物理的なものが進路を妨害していましたが、直面している「面倒なこと」を取り除くという意味でも使います（イディオム）。
・Now all my homework is out of the way, I can relax and watch TV.
宿題が全部済んだからリラックスしてテレビが見れる。
『get 〜 out of the way』 の形で使うことも多いです。
・Let’s get this out of the way.
これを先に片付けてしまおうよ。
・I finished Christmas shopping. I got it all out of the way in November.
クリスマスプレゼントの買い物は終了。11月に全部済ませてしまったよ。
