【What’s stopping you?】stop you の使い方

今回のテーマは What’s stopping you? です。

What’s stopping you?

① What’s stopping you? の意味

・「なんでやらないの？（やればいいのに）」

・used for asking why someone doesn’t do something

What’s stopping you? ＝What’s stopping you from doing something?

直訳すると「何があなたに〜することを引き留めているの？」→「何が引き留めているの？」という意味で、「なんでやらないの？」（やればいいのに）という相手の行動を促すニュアンスとしてよく使われます。

Why don’t you do it? を遠回しに言ってるようなものですね^^

似たような言い回しがこちらです↓

・What are you waiting for?

What are you waiting for? も同様で「何を待っているの？」という意味ですが、「待ってないでやればいいのに」というニュアンスで使います。

② What’s stopping you? の例文

A: It is my dream to go to Japan one day.
B: What’s stopping you?
　いつか日本を訪問するのは私の夢
　行けばいいじゃん？

・What’s stopping you from proposing to your girlfriend?
　なんで彼女にプロポーズしないの？
　

A: I really want to be a singer.
B: Well, what’s stopping you?
　まじで歌手になりたい。
　じゃ、なんでならないの？

stop you の例文

・I really want to be a singer.
・There’s nothing stopping you.
　まじで歌手になりたい。
　なればいいじゃない？（なにも/誰も君を引き留めていないよ）

・The only thing stopping you is you.
　なんでやろうとしないんだい？
（前に進めない原因は君自身だ）

・You know Kate. Once she’s decided to do something, there’s no stopping her.
　ご存知の通り、ケイトって一度するって決めたら誰も止められない。
