the last thing を使ったフレーズ総まとめ（意味・例文）

今回のテーマは the last thing 〜 です。the last thing を使った表現はたくさんあるので順番にご紹介していきます。

日本語にはない英語特有の表現になります^^

① the last thing

the last thing のコアイメージは「一番最後」です。

例文：

・Meeting someone is the last thing on my mind right now.
　出会いなんて今は眼中にないよ。
→ 「優先順位が最後」という意味で使われている

② The last thing I want (to do) is 〜

・〜だけはしたくない

・the most undesirable thing to do

The last thing I want (to do) を直訳すると「私がしたい一番最後のこと」です。

「私は〜だけはしたくない」などの強い否定を表すことができます。

例文：

・The last thing I want (to do) is to hurt you.
・Hurting you is the last thing I want.
　君を傷つけることだけはしたくない。

・The last thing I want is for you to get hurt.
　君には決して傷ついて/怪我して欲しくないんだ。

・The last thing I wanted was to cause trouble.
　問題を起こすつもりなんて決してなかったんだ。

want だけでなくneed などが続いたりもします。

・This is the last thing I needed to hear.
　こんなこと、聞きたくもなかったわ。

・Cheating on my girlfriend is the last thing I would do.
　彼女を裏切るなんてことするわけないだろ。

③ If it’s the last thing I do

・「何が何でも」

先ほどのフレーズ The last thing I want to do は、「〜だけはしたくない」という意味でしたが、

if がついた If it’s the last thing I do の場合は、

「もしこれが（人生）最後にすることなら〜」という意味から「絶対に〜したい」という強い意気込みを表します。

例文：

・I’m going to learn to speak English if it’s the last thing I do.
　何が何でも英語を話せるようになるぞ。

④ last thing 〜

❶ last thing at night「夜寝る前に」

「夜最後」という意味なので「寝る前」を意味します。

例文：

・I call my girlfriend last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
　彼女に寝る前に電話し、朝一で電話をかけている。
→ first thing in the morning「朝一番で」

❷ One last thing「最後に一つだけ」

例文：

・One last thing before we move on, 〜
　次にうつる前に最後に一つだけ、〜
