今回のテーマは under the weather です。直訳すると「天気の下」ですが、一体どういう意味なのか？見ていきましょう。
under the weather
① under the weather の意味
・具合/体調が悪い、病気である。
・feeling ill or unwell
よく使う会話例がこちら↓
“I’m (feeling) under the weather.”
誰かがこのように言った場合、「具合や体調が悪い」という意味で解釈します（= I’m not feeling well)。
風邪や二日酔いなど体が正常でないときに使えるフレーズになります。
under the weather の前に a little や a bit などがつくこともよくありますよ！
・I’m feeling a little/a bit under the weather.
ちなみに「落ち込んでいる」と表現したいときは、“I’m feeling down.” が適しています。
under the weather の由来
いくつかの由来があるようですが、よく知られている2つをご紹介します。
① 悪天候のため船酔いした船員を揺れが少ない甲板下で休ませていたという説
ここでの weather は「悪天候」を指しています。
悪天候の影響下(under the weather) → 船酔い →「具合/体調が悪い」
② under the weather bow の bow が省略されたという説
the weather bow is the side [of the ship] upon which all the rotten weather is blowing.
悪天候の場合、船首(bow)の暴風が吹きつける側は、最も船酔いの影響を受けるということで、under the weather bow → 船酔い
そこから、under the weather 「具合/体調が悪い」に変化したようです。
どちらにせよ、「悪天候」と「船酔い」が関係していたようですね^^
② under the weather の例文
・I was feeling under the weather yesterday, but I’m feeling better today.
昨日は体調が悪かったけど、今日は調子がいい。
・My dog has been under the weather so I want to stay home.
私の犬の調子が悪いから、家にいたい。
・You might want to stay away from me. I’m under the weather.
私に近付かないほうがいいよ、病気だから。
・Eat something healthy if you’re under the weather.
体調悪いんだったらヘルシーなもの食べなよ。
・I woke up a little under the weather.
今朝から体調が悪い。
・Ken called in sick yesterday because he felt under the weather.
ケンは昨日体調が悪かったので休む連絡をした。
・We were drinking till 2 last night. I’m a bit under the weather today.
昨晩は2時まで飲んでたよ。今日は少し二日酔いだ。
